Voronator
An extremely robust, no-expense spared prototype for large format 3D printer inspired by Voron 2.4 and DoomCube.
Project Status: On Hold
This project is the culmination of over 250+ hours of meticulous research, precision CAD modeling, and exhaustive component validation. Driven by a pursuit of excellence, no detail has been overlooked and no component deemed too complex or costly to thoroughly prototype and integrate. The majority of effort was spent redesigning Voron 2.4 printed parts to seamlessly accommodate larger extrusions, wider belts, beefier motors, and an inverted structural layout.
Due to an increasingly ambitious bill-of-materials (BOM)—motivated by a desire for longevity, modularity, and future-proofing—the build began to exceed the original budget. Specialized custom manufacturing further inflated costs significantly. For example, custom small-batch rotary shafts with precision-machined 'D'-profile ends jumped from around $7 each for standard models to $100+ each for the customized versions.
Essential high-load casters to support and dampen vibrations for the robust (~92 lbs) printer frame alone are $800 for a set of four. The fully drilled and tapped heavy-duty 6060 extrusion frame itself exceeds $2000. Individual vertical columns were quoted around $130 each, with horizontal spans priced around $80 each. While DIY drilling and tapping can reduce costs slightly, the risk of error adds financial and operational risk.
When accounting for Nema23 motors, premium 48V power supplies, high-end 5160Pro drivers, GT3 belts, toothed and smooth pulleys, precision rotary shafts, a MIC6 build plate, Plexiglas panels, and other hardware—the projected BOM spiraled towards $4000+. Thus, this ambitious endeavor will remain paused until technological advancements and improved manufacturing capabilities help lower these custom fabrication costs. Until then, I'll focus on completing my education, enabling the financial means to bring this vision to reality.

6060 HD Extrusions
Entirely constructed from premium 6060 Heavy Duty Misumi extrusions (bed supports are 3060), ensuring maximum rigidity and minimal vibration at high speeds.
Nema 23 Motors
Providing ample torque to overcome inertia of heavier gantry (3030 extrusion), enabling large-format printing with rapid accelerations typically reserved for smaller Voron builds.
5160Pro Drivers
Utilizes Octopus 5160Pro EZ drivers at 48 volts for maximum efficiency and safety, ensuring stable and high-performance motor control without risking driver damage during installation.
GT3 9mm Belts
With a 3mm tooth pitch, these belts deliver significantly improved torque transmission over traditional GT2 belts, critical for high-speed printing operations.
MGN12/15 Linear Rails
Overengineered by design, these linear rails provide unparalleled rigidity and precision. Wider profiles and M4 fasteners enhance stability and accuracy across all axes.
Floor-Standing Design
A unique, industrial-inspired design raises the printer ~18 inches off the ground (plus an additional 3-4 inches with recommended casters), featuring a 12-inch utility storage cubby beneath, facilitating easy cleaning and storage of accessories.
Add-On Friendly Layout
Pre-planned mounting locations on sides and rear allow ample space for nozzle wipes, automated tool changes, and future modular accessories, maximizing the printer’s functional versatility.
Insulated Panels
Generous recessed mounting space provided by 6060 extrusions allows for thicker, insulated paneling and improved thermal management—perfect for delicate, temperature-sensitive materials.
Artifact-Free Prints
Weighing in at approximately 92 lbs (excluding the build plate), the substantial mass significantly reduces vibration-induced print artifacts. TPU-based shock-absorbing mounts designed specifically for the Nema23 motors amplify vibration mitigation, ensuring pristine, professional-quality prints.
Future Considerations
The manufacturing industry currently lacks specialized products tailored explicitly for advanced, large-scale 3D printing, creating availability and cost barriers for certain critical components (e.g., open-loop GT3 belts). Despite significant inspiration from the pioneering Voron and DoomCube communities, the integration of top-tier, cutting-edge components remains financially prohibitive for most enthusiasts. I remain committed to revisiting this ambitious project when market conditions and personal resources align.
